UiTM Kedah is set up with the prime objective of providing greater opportunities for tertiary education for the Bumiputeras in the Northern region, mainly in Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perlis and Northern Perak. Its existence also aims to help the Bumiputeras to boost their education and economy.Tucked in the Bujang Valley, approximately 14 km from the heart of Sungai Petani town, the campus is built on a 350-acre land. It started its operation on 1 October 1997 and has the capacity of 7,000 students. The first batch of students consisted of 137 students from Accounting, Public Administration, Business and Banking Studies programmes.

Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Kedah dengan ini mempelawa calon-calon Bumiputera Warganegara Malaysia yang berkelayakan dalam bidang-bidang yang berkaitan untuk mengisi kekosongan jawatan di Kampus Kedah bagi memenuhi Wawasan 2020 Negara.
